Mt Washington, New Hamshire

Sometime around 55 years ago, on a summer vacation with my parents, we went to Mt Washington to ride the Cog Railroad to the Summit. The trip lasted all of 6 feet, when the train lurched to a halt and we were told that there was a problem and we would have to disembarck.

This time there was no problem with he train, and I was even there on time. I even had the pleasure of sitting next to Emma and Conner of Southampton England. At the time, I was polite not to mention being an LFC supporter or the Saints recent discipline by the EFL. Football being football, I can not resist forever. I say this all in good fun, and considering Emma has signed onto the site and will be notified about this post, I must be humble enough to acknowledge Liverpool’s struggles and bad run of form and with both clubs better luck next year.

About 15 minutes from the top we ran into the clouds, and when we reached then end of the line we could barely see 30 yards ahead. Winds were said to be around 70 MPH. I had on some of my riding gear including my rain jacket, so I was both warm and dry. I was the first one off and rail car, and forgetting the instruction just started off in the approximate direction of the summer. I ended up seeing a sign and scrambled over some rocks to get there. I have some poor photos to prove it, the problem was with the wind on the uneven rocks I could not stand up to get a good shot.

A few more minutes wandering around, rather enjoying the wind (always my favorite element) and looking around. I have a shot of one of the weather towers from about 20 or 30 yards away showing the visibility. I walked to with 20 feet of what appeared to be on edge and the wind certainly picked up as I got closer. I could not see past the edge, it was just fog / cloud, and considering the footing, decided that I was close enough.

About 20 minutes down the clouds cleared enough that we got a view to the west and what was the Green Mountain range. I would guess, one of the peaks would have been Mount Mansfield in Vermont, that I came close to summiting last summer with Web and perhaps saw the White Mountains in VT, without knowing it.

  1. Hi Paul, it was so lovely to meet you. Haha you should have mentioned football, we’d have been happy to wallow in the misfortunes of both Liverpool and the Saints! Let’s just say that Connor (not Collin, but he forgives you) didn’t wear his Saints shirt all holiday. We wish you all the best, safe travels 🙂
