Today, June 16th will be my 60th day on this trip. I’ve covered just about 7,500 miles and I am currently in my 19th state. I’ve put my hands into Lake Ontario on Lake Erie. I have three Great Lakes to go. Had a nice afternoon at Niagara Falls. Seen some amazing scenery through every state.
Somebody recently asked me what was my favorite thing that I’ve seen so far and I got to five or six. I was realizing that they were still more so I’m not sure I have a favorite but there are some highlights so far which include Lake Ontario, Niagara Falls, Cape Hatteras National seashore, Eastern Maine, the plains of Maryland, A couple of views from the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.
Those are the places I’ve seen, but the time I’ve spent with family, new friends, long-time friends and some of the people I’ve met along the way, even some simple conversations, are probably going to stay with me longer. And are more meaningfully than anything else.
There have been some challenging days, some hot days, some cold days. Some great days. There have been times when I’ve been road weary, just wanting to go home though, that’s an odd concept as I don’t actually have a home to go to. There was that interesting moment as I rolled into Richmond, Virginia and saw a Publix grocery store, which is practically on every corner in Florida, and I hadn’t seen one for several weeks. I felt like I had come home and found civilization again, hahaha.
I’m writing this in the hotel room outside of Knoxville, Tennessee and earlier yesterday I had crossed beneath I-75 and realized that three years ago in August I had driven through there heading south from Detroit back to Florida. At the time I had no idea what I was actually driving past. What that part of Tennessee even lookd like. I have a much better idea now which is of course the point of this entire trip.
Yep, back on the road again shortly, more to come.
